Echinacea

Echinacea & Goldenseal is an acute formula, to be used when either one feels like they are about to come down with a cold/flu (take every couple hours), or if cold/ flu symptoms are already present (take at least 3 times per day until symptoms subside). Echinacea stimulates innate immunity and excites phagocytosis of the white blood cells in general circulation while Goldenseal stimulates immunity in the respiratory tract to act more vigorously. It will help keep control over undesirable microorganisms. Goldenseal is indicated for warm and hot immune conditions. In the respiratory, it works best when the mucus is thick, yellow, or green in color. It is an effective remedy for sinus infections. It should only be used when acute or sick. Do not use over two weeks. The key active ingredients of Goldenseal include the alkaloids hydrastine and berberine. They exhibit the antibacterial action effective against Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus sanguis, Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Berberine is also anti-parasitic, amoebicidal, kills giardia, inhibits smooth muscle contraction and is anti-inflammatory. It is specific for parasitic infections. The bitter alkaloids from Goldenseal will also increase bile secretion as well as flow by relaxing the bile duct, thus helping in fat digestion. Secondarily they will increase peristalsis and therefore assist in bowel regularity. Echinacea and Goldenseal is effective for infections in any mucosal tissue including: Respiratory tract (sinus, throat, lung) Urinary tract (bladder, kidney, ureter, urethra) Digestive tract (whole length) Reproductive tract (male and female) Goldenseal is becoming a threatened plant, so only organically cultivated goldenseal should be used (Vitality Works uses only organically cultivated goldenseal in all of our liquid extracts). Dong Quai (also known as Tang Kuei or Dang Gui) is a famous Chinese herb used for many menstrual irregularities. It is used in menopause to lessen the negative symptoms of hot flashes, mood swings and irritability. It is also used in premenstrual (PMS) disorders to decrease the discomfort of cramps, slow onset, dull ache, mood swings, bloating and irritability. Dong Quai is an estrogen synergist. It sensitizes the binding or absorption sites where estrogen is absorbed into the body and will increase levels of estrogen. In menopause where estrogen is decreasing, it helps satisfy the bodies craving and diminishes symptoms. In PMS, Dong Quai accentuates the estrogen phase or phase from menses to ovulation. It is especially indicated for cycles longer than 28 days. It is contraindicated for cycles less than 28 days, which is estrogen excess (use Chaste Tree Berries here). Dong Quai will help bring a longer cycle back to a 28-day cycle, help bring on a crampy slow onset period and possibly help alleviate a dry vagina. Dong Quai helps swollen prostates for men due to its ability to lessen pelvic con- gestion. It also purifies and nourishes the blood and has been found useful in the treatment of Anemia. Indications are for adults and children. Ear Clear Oil is indicated for acute and chronic ear infections. It is a topical remedy where the oil is gently dropped into the ear. It is a topical analgesic (Mullein and Arnica) as it helps to reduce pain and discomfort from swelling due to an infection. It will increase circulation (Arnica) to this congested area in order to help increase the body's ability to help heal the area and remove extra fluid buildup. This is needed in order to decrease the pain from an ear infection. Arnica works by increasing circulation to ischemic tissue and is great for sub-acute congestion in tissue with topical contact. At the same time, Ear Clear Oil is strongly antibacterial and helps to kill bacterial on contact (Coptis, Garlic). Coptis is a Goldenseal substitute as it contains even greater amounts of the alkaloid berberine and is a famous Chinese herb.
